About the Units of Work in the Teaching & Learning Program

The Teaching and Learning Program is broken into Units. The first Unit explores the local area including:

  • the people
  • languages
  • history
  • cultural Protocols
  • basic greetings in the local language/s
  • identity
  • custodians
  • passing on culture
  • the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures
  • and much more.
We strongly advise that Unit 1 should be delivered before any of the other Units. However after this, other Units have been designed to be delivered in any order and can be adapted to fit in with your programming schedule.

Each Unit comes in the form of a book called the Teaching Guide. The Teaching Guide includes information on delivering the program, Step by Step Lesson plans and printable student worksheets.

Each Unit is designed to be delivered over 1 school term, approximately 10 weeks. Approximately 10-20 hours of teaching and learning material is provided in each Unit. Lessons are based on approximately 60 minutes of delivery, though this may vary depending on the class size, teaching methods, student engagement in discussions and their level of ability.

12 Teaching and Learning Units are currently being developed broken into the themes of Place, Practices and People. The first Unit of Place - Local Area is ready and available now.
